It's not just a bag, it's Birkin
The brand got its name after Jane Birkin an actress and singer of UK origins, yet living in France, and former wife of Serge Ginsbourg. According to Stephanie Pendersen and her book Handbags, What Every Woman Should Know, the genesis back to the plane travel, during which Jane complaint to her neighbour about the Hermes bag, model Kelly (from Grace Kelly), which she had with her. She claimed the fastening to be inconvenient.
The neighbour turned out to be the chairman of Hermes fashion house, who suggested that the actress went with him to the Hermes' office and drew the bag of her dreams. So it happened, and the model named Birkin soon found its way to the sale.
In the period of the past quarter of a century Jane's dream-bag became a dream-bag of all successful women, of stars and celebs. The word "Birkin" is at present associated with the bag rather than with the person of Jane. The price of the Birkin bag fluctuates from 4 thousand to even a few hundred thousand dollars depending on the version of the model. Unfortunately, in order to have it, it is necessary to put ones name on a long waiting list, yet chances of the purchase are little.
You surely remember a scene from SeX and the City, when Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) tried to get it by pretending she was Lucy Liu. Here's the sequence:
In Gossip Girl only Lily van der Woodsen, Serena's mother and one of most influential women of New York is in possession of the Birkin bag.
I wouldn't mind if I were to have a Birkin bag, yet there's nothing to complain to as far as Bruno Premi or BP Zone bags are concerned.
