Many stylists claim that it's best to choose thights in colour that is either corresponding, or lighter from this of shoes. However, it's a little bit too constraining for creative fashionistas. Below, we present some interesting ideas by celebrities.
It's not about shiny golden or silver tights. We suggest combining heels with tights in similar tone but with a slight sheen. They look very fresh and feminine. They go perfectly with both, casual and evening dresses. Just look at Zooey Deschanel.
Theoretically speaking, shiny tights are acceptable with shoes in the same or lighter tone. In practice, it's good to check combinations, try them on and ask yourself, whether you look and feel good.
Stylizations consisting of shoes, dresses and tights in the same colour are usually dull. Take a look at Hilary Duff, for instance. This time, even interesting shoes couldn't helpl. Natali Portman, on the other hand, worked it out quite well.
Last year, there's been a trend to liven stylization of dark clothes and dark shoes with colourful tights. However, colourful dress combined with black tights and black shoes presents itself much more attractive. For such stylizations, we highly recommend heeled Mary Janes.
black - patent/suede
the claim that pastel dresses don't match black tights, should be, once and for good, put among other myths. I avoid wearing black tops with black bottoms the same way as I avoid wearing jeans with blue shirts. Why should I limit myself to monochromatic sets?
Black is a neutral colour, so it should match everything. Black tights (necessarily mat) with black pumps complete dresses in pastel tones, even those with floral motifs. Anna Kendrick and Amanda Peet seem to confirm it.
I especially recommend peep-toes and Mary Janes. They present themselves very girlish and they ad a zest to the stylization.

Models don't need to worry that tights or shoes will optically shorten their legs. Still, the easiest way to avoid it, is to wear thights in the colour of shoes.
This combination has one more advantage - it accentuates vivid colour, unusual cut or pattern of your dress. I suggest colourful dresses with black counterpoint. Choosing them you'll gain a perfect set.

Jessica Alba dealt with it masterfully. She matched blue pep-toe boots and black thights with checked dress. The only problem with this set is that it may shorten your legs.
Black serves as a background in Jessica's stylization. You'll get a similar effect using greys.
Sporty Weekend Set
If not black then what?
Black is the most popular colour for thighs. However, when we decide on black tights, to play it safe, we usually match them with black dress and black stiletto. Elegant black is good for evenings, during daytime we want something more cheerful!
In case of tights in lighter tones, we've got more possibilities. Reese Witherspoon is a great example. She's wearing olive-green boots and navy blue dress. The background - black tights.
Mind it, that you may easily overdose colours (warning picture):
Preparing this article I browsed through many pictures of celebrities. I noticed that Jennifer Connelly has been most successful in matching tights with shoes. To sum up, I present picture of hers at Late Show with David Letterman.
Jenifer combined a black smart jacket with black tights. She lightened her stylization with fascinating open-toes. Her set looks fabulous. Most importantly, it's universal and would be suitable for work. Mind that looser shaft makes her ankles look slimmer.
Olive Style Set
There is no universal stylistic recipe. The important thing is to look good and feel confident.
